As a nurse, you can work in various settings such as outpatient centers, the offices of physicians, hospitals and senior care homes among others. To qualify to become a nurse, you need to get training from an accredited school. Nursing schools in New Jersey offer various types of programs that enable students to get a certificate or an associates, masters, bachelors or doctorate degree in nursing.

To qualify for entry level positions the nursing field, students can enroll for a diploma that takes a year to complete if they want to become licensed practical or vocational nurses. Students can study for two years and obtain an associates degree. Another option is to complete 2 or more years of nurse training and get certified as registered nurses. Students can also enroll for a bachelors degree program to become registered nurses.

It takes four years to complete a bachelors degree. This program equips students with important skills that allow them to take on leadership roles in this field and perform research. Registered nurses who have associates degrees can enroll into schools that offer RN to BSN programs. These programs provide nurses with advanced management skills, increased career advanced opportunities, additional technical training and knowledge about reviewing research papers.

RN to MSN programs are also available in many schools. You can only enroll into such a program if you have completed college perquisite courses and 15 to 18 semester hours of the courses covered in RN to BSN programs. The advanced programs available include doctor of nursing practice or DNP and doctor of philosophy or PHD degrees.

The DNP degree is considered to be the terminal practice oriented degree in this field while the PHD is considered to be a research and academic oriented degree. The DNP degree concentrates on clinical nursing instead of academic research. Registered nurses who want to become advanced practice nurses can enroll into the DNP program. They can then work as certified nurse midwives, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists or certified registered nurse anesthetists.

Many nursing colleges in New Jersey also offer accredited online programs. By enrolling into such programs, you can advance your career easily because they offer flexible hours. The first step in getting into a college is submitting an application. After you receive an acceptance letter into the college of your choice, you will get information about the date when you will be required to attend an orientation.

Orientation will help you become familiar with the school, its procedures, policies and its learning environment. The college will also provide you with a schedule detailing the days and times when classes are offered. You will also get information about the list of supplies you need such as comfortable shoes, scrubs, notebooks, drug guides and a stethoscope among others.

Choosing an accredited college is essential because this helps guarantee students that they can find a job after completing their studies. Accredited colleges also offer great learning opportunities and may also offer financial aid, special grants from various sources, scholarships and other financial resources. Students can apply for these scholarships and grants through their colleges to pay for their college expenses.
