A Private Duty Nurse Provides An Appreciated Service

By Marci Glover

Many people need more help, while in the hospital, than what is available from the staff of that institution. A large percentage of the elderly need special assistance and it is just not in the budget of many hospitals. The private duty nurse can be called on to fill in this gap as they can perform many of the same chores.

These nurses will come in handy during the hospital stay as they assist the registered nurses and all other medical staff stay on top of the patients condition. They can take the vital information, such as blood pressure, heart rate, measure the intake and out flow of liquids and document all for analysis. They can assist in administering many of the routine drugs as well.

A nurse of this type is indispensable in the home, also. This is where they really shine. Many of the family members can become overwhelmed by the services and assistance an unhealthy or injured person needs on a day to day basis. They are not prepared for the bathing, feeding and the recording of everything that is part and parcel of a recovery effort.

The private nurse will have had to undergo course courses in basis health studies as well as nursing practices to begin their career as a nurse. This is followed by, usually, study and training rounds at a teaching hospital. Many of them will have been to four years of college and certified as a registered nurse, yet not joined any hospital staff.

Taking readings and recording the results is one very good way to monitor the patients well being. That, combined with understanding the patients moods and ways of talking and acting, will help these professionals make proper reports to the doctors. This personal way of dealing with patients is very important as not all tests or machines have that intrinsic value for the medical professionals follow up.

These nurses will need to be involved in many activities. They will be dealing with tracheotomies, catastrophic injury and tube feedings. Ventilators will need to be prepared and cleaned, insulin pumps will be monitored as well as the many different types of spinal injuries must be known about. This is a very short list, however, and the need for all around knowledge is beneficial should anything arise that is out of the ordinary.

When looking for a private nurse, you should contact one of the many agencies that deal with this. Find out how long they have been in business and talk with several of their nurses to see which one is your best choice. The individual should have the knowledge your loved one needs help with and a few others that are associated with the age of that patient. Certification of the nurse and the agency should not be negotiable.

Having one of these professionals for that member of your family who needs this help is important. Many insurance companies will pay for this type of service, however, some of them will not, so check into this. Whether they are attending your loved one at the hospital, in a care facility setting or at home, they are invaluable for your peace of mind.

By Brandon Powers As individuals age, they often notice vision problems that naturally occur as one grows older. Even though certain people may become frightened, vision changes of this kind do not typically indicate serious health issues. However, frustration can set in when one cannot see good enough to operate a car or read.
